Easter incense — a pure, deep aroma of resinous frankincense. A modern revival of an ancient Ukrainian Easter tradition of home fumigation.
When Volodymyr baptized Rus, along with the Byzantine church tradition came frankincense — one of the oldest incenses in the world. In church, its smoke is called "fimiam" — a symbol of prayer rising to God, an invisible bridge between the earthly and the heavenly. Over time, frankincense entered everyday life: in central and eastern regions it was placed into the Easter basket, alongside a candle and festive foods.
Upon returning home, the head of the household or an adult son would fumigate the home with blessed frankincense. Only then would the festive meal begin. It was believed that the smoke of frankincense cleansed the space, warded off evil, and protected the family.
Frankincense (Boswellia sacra) — aromatic resin from trees of the genus Boswellia. Came to Ukraine with Christianity in the 10th century and is used in church and home rituals.
